Sol Star System
The Sol Star System is one of five star systems comprising the Pentalog, and itself consists of one sun and nine major orbiting planetary bodies. Humans currently inhabit Earth, Earth's primary satellite (see The Moon I for the history of lunar colonization), and Mars.
Humanity's Origins
Although human civilizations have been found in five star systems, the consensus of the intergalactic scientific community - such as it is - is that human life originated in the Sol System. Specifically, the continent of Africa on Earth is presumed to have been the historic genetic home of humanity. It was from Africa that humanity spread throughout the planet and created increasingly more advanced cultures and civilizations starting around 10,000 years ago.
Parallels with other Star Systems
Additionally, archaeological evidence in other star systems also points to a date of roughly 10,000 years ago for the start-point of their respective civilizations. Unlike Earth, however, there is no evidence of human life prior to this date (see Human Diaspora).
Governments
Earth, The Moon I, and Mars are each self-governing. Earth, with the longest history of divided sovereignty, has retained the form of major nation states, but decisions that are planetary in scope are dealt with through the Council of the Nations. The Moon I, founded as a joint project of Earth's major nation states, is a moon-wide parliamentary democracy. Mars, colonized (not without tragedy (see Colonization of Mars)) solely by the former OPEC nations, is a planet-wide monarchy.
