Nathanial Wilberforce Sherman
Nathanial Wilberforce Sherman (b.1810; d.1893)
Wealthy Oakland, CA monitor lizard rancher, world traveler, and philanthropist. Known as Wilber to his friends. Married once, to Persephone Fenchurch Fitzculloden on June 27, 1872 in Madagascar. Father of Henrietta Gabrielle Nineveh Sherman. Died in 1893 in a tragic hot air balloon accident when he and Persephone were blown out to sea by a freak storm. The two were found the following day, huddled under the broken basket and wrapped in the deflated balloon for shelter and are presumed to have died from exposure, as neither had any broken bones or serious injuries.
