Molnieta

Molnieta is a small, boring, and all around relatively bleak post-industrial city located in Erie, a region of North-Eastern-ish Lithuania. Historically, its only interesting features have been the Erie Canal, which bisects the city, and its status as the birthplace of Jonny "Glint" Glintcheq, later know as "The Great Con of North-Eastern-ish Lithuania". In recent decades however, Molnieta has surprisingly emerged as the center of a modern Lithuanian music scene.

The Erie Canal

The Erie Canal is a 22 km long artifical waterway connecting two mid-sized lakes whose names are not even worth mentioning. There is general consensus among historians that the Erie Canal is only notable for having had absolutely no effect on history at all, beyond the city of Molnieta itself. Its existence has long been somewhat of a mystery, considering it is essentially a trade waterway, connecting two lakes that have never seen any significant trade. The most accepted explanation to date comes from noted canal historian Sigmund Bartholomew who, after extensive research on the topic, was only able to surmise that the people of Molnieta built the canal "because they had nothing better to do." This explanation is described as perfectly reasonable by anyone who has actually been there.

Construction was completed in late 1901. When the canal, which had been personally financed by Molnieta citizens, failed to bring any income into the community, many families were left destitute, and the population dwindled. It wasn't until 1945, when Jonny "Glint" Glintcheq became Mayor of Molnieta, that the canal saw any use at all. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Glint was able to convince several large manufacturing companies that building plants along the Erie Canal would be a worthwhile undertaking. For a time, the city prospered.

A short time. Eleven years later, after two and three-quarter terms as Mayor, Jonny "Glint" suddenly abdicated and left Molnieta altogether. Three years after that, the local plants began shutting down, one by one. By 1965, nearly half the population was unemployed.

Since then, the city has never fully recovered. The area is more boring than ever, with most of its waterfront now the site of decaying industrial architecture, and the Canal itself is considered a centre of violence and drug use.

Emerging Music Scene

The most famous example of this might be Progressive Wave Metal, popularised by Continental Grift, whose members grew up in the city. A subgenre, Thunderbleat, can actually trace its origin to a single 2005 concert by Pious Apostasy, occuring directly on the Erie Canal itself.

Other notable bands cominng out of Molnieta include American Bloodlust and Gary's Not Here!.

Goat Controversy

Reclusive musician and critic P. Barnaby Stanislaus has been quoted saying "They do not have goats in Erie." Given the ubiquitousness of goats throughout Lithuania, this statement is considerably suspect.
