Phemra
Phemra is the art of control over the physical world through mastery of the Phemral Tongue. According to legend, the great Mage King Sulnok The First was first to learn the Tongue and master Phemra, although the myths of how he came to do so are many and varied.
Practitioners of Phemra are able to effect great feats and are responsible for many of the most impressive wonders of the world, including the Whispering Bridge, the ships of the Zephyr Fleet and most famously, the Great Spire of the Mage's College.
While the power and accomplishments of Phemra are obvious, there is much that is yet unknown about its workings and source. A famous mystery concerns the existence of Quietudes, such as the Glass Sea and areas of the surrounding Glittering Sands, areas in which Phemra seems to have no effect, and even Phemral Artifacts cease functioning.
Origins
The Phemral Tongue
The Phemral Tongue is a language which allows those who master it to literally speak that which they describe into existence. The Tongue is extremely difficult to learn, and those who do so often spend the better part of their lives in study. Even then, few ever achieve the proficiency required to craft Wonders on the order of the Whispering Bridge.
A Phemrist alters the world by describing it as he wishes it to be. The more complex the desired result, the more difficult the Phemral grammar required to achieve it. The effectiveness of Phemra depends on three qualities which the speaker must master: Clarity, Cadence and Projection.
Simple acts of creation, such as forming a rock from nothing, require relatively simple declarative statements; the Phemrist utters a sentence which asserts that "there is a rock". The same is true for simple acts of destruction, such as blasting open a door. The Phemrist utters a declarative negative statement such as "there is no door".
