Idea Transport Theory
Idea Transport Theory was developed in the later years of the 22nd century, when it became clear that the amount of energy required the develop inter-planetary teleportation would be prohibitive. Instead, physicists and philosophers - in a rare confluence - decided to work together on creating a low-energy solution.
The theory
Rather than using physical energy to power transportation devices, the theory holds that ideas themselves can be transported through collective meditation. However, since each physical thing in the universe in fact is a combination of many ideas and properties, the meditation would have to be exceedingly specific. That is to say, one could not move a book simply by thinking "book," but rather the book's author, title, basic size, and so on, until only the book in question was being referenced.
Applications
The idea remained largely theoretical until the advent of Transanimation in the early 23rd century.
Historical Legacy
Idea Transport Theory eventually led to the creation of the highly controversial Spirit Displacement Device and the associated tragedy.
